Cyber tips for summer trips
Before you zip up your suitcase and turn on vacation mode, don’t miss our latest podcast episode featuring Todd (COO & CISO) and Nate (Director of Cybersecurity). They’re sharing practical, easy-to-follow tips to help protect your digital life—so you can enjoy your trip without worrying about hackers tagging along.
Stay Secure While You Soak Up the Sun
And while it’s tempting to let your guard down once you’re poolside with a drink in hand, Nate puts it best: “Just because you’re on a beach or sitting in a hotel room doesn’t mean you’re immune to cyber threats.”
Vacation-Proof Your Devices
Before you hit the road, take a few minutes to tackle the core four cybersecurity essentials that keep you safe anywhere:
Update Everything
Keeping your apps, operating system, and devices up to date is one of the simplest yet most powerful ways to protect yourself. Updates often include patches for security vulnerabilities that hackers are eager to exploit. Think of these updates as your digital armor—without them, your devices are left exposed and vulnerable. So before you leave, make sure your phone, laptop, and any other gadgets have the latest updates installed.
Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Passwords alone aren’t enough anymore. Adding multi-factor authentication (MFA) to your most important accounts—especially email, banking, and social media—provides an extra layer of security. Even if someone gets ahold of your password, MFA can stop them in their tracks by requiring a second form of verification, like a code sent to your phone. It’s quick to set up and a game-changer for protecting your digital identity.
Use Strong, Unique Passwords
Ditch the easy-to-guess passwords like “Summer2024!” or “password123.” Instead, use strong, unique passwords for every account. If you’re overwhelmed keeping track, a password manager can generate and securely store complex passwords for you. This way, you don’t have to remember them all, and you drastically reduce the risk of being hacked through reused or weak passwords.
Watch Out for Phishing
Phishing scams get sneakier, especially when you’re traveling and distracted. Be extra cautious with emails, texts, or messages asking for personal info or prompting you to click suspicious links—even if they appear to come from trusted sources. Take a moment to verify before you respond or tap, because one careless click can lead to major headaches.
Bonus Tip: Sign Out of Shared Devices
If you sign into streaming apps, email, or any accounts on devices you don’t own—like a rental TV or hotel tablet—always remember to sign out before you check out. It’s an easy step to forget, but leaving your accounts open can give cybercriminals a direct line to your information. Take a minute to log out and protect your privacy.
